Tomorrow night as the Matildas trot out on to Stadium Australia for the Asian Cup final against Japan, we can reflect on the impact NSW Little Athletics has had on the start of the sporting journey of some of the players.
Commencing Thursday on the freshly laid track at Sydney Olympic Park, is the 129th NSW Championships. The championships will also incorporate the HART Sport 55th Little Athletics NSW Track and Field Championships for ages U9-U12.
On day four of the NSW Junior Championships, being held on the new Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre surface, tailwinds were very welcomed by the 200m athletes, while in the distance events, we treated to some thrilling tactical half mile races. There was also an unusual situation with 12 athletes clearing the same equal winning height in the 14-years girls high jump.

In overcast conditions, day one of the NSW Junior Championships got underway on the newly surfaced two-tine blue track at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre. It was also 32-years since the venue was first opened for the 1994 Australian Athletics Championships.
Over the last year we have watched some of our leading junior athletes develop into familiar names, athletes like Izzy Louison-Roe, Isaac Beacroft, Ky Garratt, Mason McGroder and Zavier Peacock, but who are some new names to watch this week at the NSW Junior Championships?
We have highlighted five to follow this weekend and into the future, and found they all have an interesting story to tell ranging from their pathway and athletics journey to family history in the sport.
Ted Simmons worked in sports administration as an official (primarily announcer), referee, journalist and historian for over 70 years. He volunteered at all levels, from club to international, in various sports, but particularly athletics, football (soccer) and tenpin bowling. A lifetime dedication to sports administration earned him an OAM in 2006 and dozens of other awards and recognition of his achievements. Ted sadly passed away this month, aged 97.

On February 20 Janine Mladin lost a 13-year battle with a brain tumor. Since diagnosis and her first operation in 2012, Janine had battled the condition and been a great inspiration to those around her. Janine was a state level NSW athlete and between brain operations continued to volunteer as a NSW Athletics official, reaching the level of Commonwealth Games official in 2018.
NSW teenagers were in extraordinary form at the Chemist Warehouse Hobart Track Classic. Daniel Okerenyang set a NSW record, Delta Amidzovski sets a LJ PB, while there were World U20 Championships qualifiers for Izzy Louison-Roe (HJ), Ivy Boothroyd (800m), Matthew McLachlan (3000m) and Eliza Lawton (3000m).
In sport, athlete journeys vary enormously and it is no different in Masters athletics.
During the weekend at the NSW Masters State Championships, we discovered some interesting pathways, but importantly also learned about the beautiful and positive impact athletics is having on their lives.

Competing in stifling heat across the weekend, Robbie Cullen claimed his third consecutive decathlon title at the 94th edition of the event. While in the women’s, in just her second heptathlon, Sarah Luxford recorded one of the best performances in the last two decades at the 73rd edition of the championship.
Dubbo Athletics Club, hosts for the 2026 NSW Country Championships, have dominated the championships claiming an historic win in the points score. Dubbo scored 915.5, to defeat Blue Mountains/Springwood (611.5), Mingara (467) and Athletics Wollongong (431).
Throwers have led the way at the three-day 81st NSW Country Championships at Dubbo. One performance which particularly stood out was Cowra’s Ky Garratt in the under-20 hammer throw, launching his pathway to the international stage.
