TYPES OF VOLUNTEERS
This is the first step for anyone interested in officiating and you may already be doing this with no mandatory qualifications required. This is aimed at people wanting to help out at one off events or at their local club nights, carnivals, fundraisers or events. We do recommend completing the short 5 - 10 minute online LAB (Local Athletics Basic) course relevant to the area where you'll be assisting.
Had a taste for event volunteering and now want to take the next step by becoming an official within your local commuity. This is the perfect place to start with two main steps involved. Complete your online community officials course in the relevant event of choice and be deemed competent by one of our practical assessors.
Aimed at those who have officiated at a local level (usually Zone or Region) and are now looking for the next step in their journey to start supporting State based Athletics events including major championships as well as other events throughout the Summer and/or Winter Calendar.
Ideally by this stage, you'll have completed your Community Official's accreditation in the relevant area or have had a an equivalent amount of practical experience officiating at Zone & Region events. To ensure you're prepared for State events, we ask you complete the four recommended modules mentioned below as part of your qualifications before officiating at this level.
These modules (Apprentice Level) can be completed in any order.
- Long/Triple Jump
- Shot Put
- The Race
- The Start
To begin these modules, please navigate to Courses> Technical Officials > Apprentice Level located on the World Athletics E-Learning site below
Aimed at those State Officials who are ready to start venturing interstate to our country's major championships including the National Track & Field Championships. With many opportunities available throughout the year and support along the way, this is ideal for those people who are looking to be involved in supporting our most promising and best athletes in the nation.
Two step process to gain National accreditation: Complete the NAR (National Athletics Referee) course on the World Athletics E-Learning HUB & Complete three days of practical officiating at permitted competitions. In order to complete your practicals, you'll need to submit your certificate gained from completion of the NAR modules to volunteers@nswathletics.org.au
To begin these modules, please navigate to Courses> Technical Officials > National Athletics located on the World Athletics E-Learning site below
Applications to become a World Accredited Official occur annually and must be accompanied by at least three year's experience as a National Athletics Official (as accredited from the above).
NSW Athletics will request Expressions of Interest via official's communication channels when the time for the intake is due. Further information on the National Pathway and beyond can be found via Australia Athletics
