NSW Athletics has today announced the recruitment of a new senior leadership position, General Manager – Community, marking a significant investment in clubs, volunteers and the grassroots athletics community across New South Wales.

The role forms part of the continued evolution of the NSW Athletics Partnership, which has brought Athletics NSW and Little Athletics NSW together to better align the delivery of athletics across the state and strengthen the sport’s long-term future.

The General Manager – Community will provide strategic leadership across community participation, membership, club development, education, inclusion and integrity programs. The role will also play an important part in advancing the sport’s facilities strategy and supporting clubs and centres to grow and thrive within their local communities.

CEO of Athletics NSW, Christian Renford, said:

“The establishment of the position demonstrates the partnership’s commitment to strengthening the foundations of the sport.

“Athletics in NSW is built on the dedication of thousands of volunteers, coaches, officials and club administrators who provide opportunities for people to participate in our sport every week.

“The creation of the General Manager – Community role reflects our commitment to better supporting those people and investing in the long-term sustainability of clubs and centres across the state.”

The role has been shaped by insights gathered through recent member surveys, which identified opportunities to strengthen club capability, enhance education pathways for coaches and officials, improve volunteer support and deliver more consistent services to members across NSW, and will bring together strategically the work of our education, membership and centre support teams

Working closely with the Sport Delivery, Performance & Pathways functional areas and NSW Schools Athletics, the General Manager – Community will lead the development of initiatives designed to improve member experiences, strengthen club governance and support participation growth.

CEO of Little Athletics NSW, Chris Giles, said:

“Our members have consistently been clear that strong clubs and well-supported volunteers are essential to the future of athletics.

“This role will ensure NSW Athletics has the leadership and focus required to respond to those insights and deliver meaningful outcomes for our community.”

The General Manager – Community position is now open, with applications invited from experienced sport and community leaders who are passionate about participation and the long-term development of athletics.

The position description and application details are available here.

The successful candidate is expected to commence prior to the 2026/27 athletics season and will play a key role in delivering the next phase of the NSW Athletics Partnership and supporting the continued growth of athletics across the state.
