Treloar Shield FAQ
The Treloar Shield is a series of organised Track and Field competitions held in the greater Sydney area between October- December. The emphasis is on fun and enjoyment while participating in our sport. Sure, you will get to share the venue with a few Olympians from time to time, but the event is pitched at all athletes (including Para athletes) of all abilities and standards, aged 9-80+.
A point score also operates so get your club mates out and about!
The series is named in honour of John Treloar AM, one of NSW and Australia’s greatest ever sprinters. John Treloar was Australia’s last finalist in the Men’s 100 metres at an Olympic Games- all the way back at the 1952 Olympics!
He was also a 3 time Gold Medallist at the Empire Games (now Commonwealth Games) and a six (6) time Australian Champion.
Information on each round of the Treloar Shield is available on the website here.
The Treloar Shield has experienced significant growth over the last three seasons. Entry numbers from 2024/25 have reached a point where it is difficult to deliver the same high-quality competition experience at a single venue. Competitions were already taking over 8 hours to complete, and this does not factor in growth, which we hope/expect in 2025.
NSW Athletics views the Treloar Shield as a product for everyone. Restricting participation is not an option, so a multi-venue model is being introduced to maintain event quality and accessibility and to provide a more manageable product offering for everyone.
Multi-Venue
- For four of the six Treloar Shield rounds, events will be held at two separate venues on the same day.
- The SOPAC rounds will be conducted across both the main and warm up Track
- Athletes can choose which venue to attend.
- Both venues will run a full program of events within a similar timeframe.
The choice of venue is up to the athlete, not the club or centre. You can enter and compete at either venue, but you must choose one for that round.
No. There is no set club allocation for venues. However some clubs, to foster team spirit, may suggest a venue.
No. Athletes may only compete at one venue per round. We are not in a position to accept entries at both venues.
Where an event is held at both venues:
- Results from both venues will be combined into a single results list.
- Points will then be awarded based on these combined results.
- There will be no separate point scores for each venue.
The majority of events will be offered across both venues in each round.
There are exceptions to this, in events of a more specialist nature with lower traditional competitor numbers.
Check the event grids and Timetables for further information.
If there is space and the change is requested before entries close, NSW Athletics will do its best to accommodate venue changes.
Once entries close, changes will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.
No. The same rules, age groups, and scoring system will apply at both venues.
Venue Control Limits
Venue Control Limits are a way of managing the number of athletes at each venue to ensure the best possible competition experience.
If too many athletes attend one venue and very few attend the other, it becomes difficult to deliver a balanced, positive experience for everyone.
No. They are not designed to stop athletes from competing. The aim is to spread participation evenly across venues so that both have the right number of athletes to run efficiently and safely.
They will be applied for Rounds 3, 5, and 6 ONLY.
Given the nature of Rounds 1, 2, and 4, Venue Control Limits will not be applied to these events.
No. They only apply to events that take place at both venues in the same round.
Specialist events that are only offered at one venue in a round will not be subject to Venue Control Limits, and athletes may still enter these after the Limit has been reached (up to the published entry closing date).
In the unlikely event of this occurrence, NSW Athletics will offer limited additional spots at both venues.
Unfortunately, once the cap for a venue is reached, we cannot accept further entries for that venue, unless you are entering a specialist event only offered at that venue.
No. We do not operate a waitlist for Venue Control Limits.
Permit Status
Previously, the Treloar Shield was conducted under a World Athletics Permit, which allows performances to count towards international qualification.
While this is important for a small group of athletes, the permit also comes with a high level of regulation from World Athletics. These requirements don’t always align with the ethos of the competition and can impact the overall delivery for the majority of participants.
At its heart, the Treloar Shield is a competition for everyone. The reduction in permit allows us to continue to provide a quality competition product but without the regulation.
From this season, the Treloar Shield will operate under a NSW Permit.
- Athletes can still qualify for the Australian Championships.
- The event will still be conducted to a high standard.
- Athletes seeking international qualification will have other opportunities throughout the season.
In almost all cases, no.
The change is intended to enhance the athlete experience, not reduce it.
Most athletes will not notice any difference in the standard of delivery.
Yes. Nothing changes in that respect; performances at the Treloar Shield will still be eligible for National qualification.
Yes. As per the entry regulations for this age group, the Treloar Shield is one of several competitions throughout the season where athletes can record a performance for this purpose.
No. This is one of the changes with the NSW Permit.
However, there are several other events during the season where performances will count towards your World Athletics profile.
Check the Event Grid for details.

Effectively yes.
But remember, each track event is seeded.
This means where there are multiple races within an age group, that all athletes will be competing against athletes of a similar standard as them.
It is also important to remember that the series attracts a range of standards of athletes and the idea is to compete in a fun and enjoyable environment.
Yes, you can.
Athletes may use implements or race for the entered age group in accordance with event specifications indicated in the age group specification link on the event page here.
Performances will be recognised in the age groups listed in the competition rules without any further adjustment of the recorded times or distances.
The implement must be the same weight for the duration of that competition.
Please see the age group specifications grid here for more information
That’s ok, but please ensure you contact us here to let us know.
That way we can scratch you from the race and get the seeding right.
Events and Timetable
The event grid is available on the event page here.
A timetable for each round will be available on the event pages. This is a provisional/draft timetable which gives each athlete an understanding of the time they will compete.
By 12pm the day before each round, a final timetable will be published giving each athlete a full understanding of the exact time the event will be held.
Yes, by 12pm the day prior to competition, we will post a start list that will indicate the athletes in your race, and what lane/position you will compete in.
In some cases, due to athletes withdrawing, we may need to condense track races on the start line. This may change the race or lane you have been drawn in, but you won’t compete any earlier than what has been indicated on the final timetable
Yes, all races are seeded.
During the entry process, you will be asked for your seed time. This is a recent performance you have achieved for the event. This will allow us, within your age group, to put you in a race with participants of similar standards to your yourself.
Due to the number of participants, we need to run multiple pools of field events.
Depending on the field event, it may be conducted in by gender, it may be conducted as the distance likely to be thrown (i.e the Hammer >50m is for throwers who throw further than 50m) or by take off board or starting height.
Please ensure you enter the pool most applicable to you for the best experience for you and all athletes.
Questions for Club Administrators...
Clubs do not need to register to participate.
For the preliminary rounds, athletes enter themselves. Entries open 12 days prior and close the Tuesday prior to competition day.
Points will automatically be assigned to clubs who have athletes participating.
For the preliminary rounds, the club does not need to inform us who is competing or nominate which athletes are scorers. It is all done automatically.
For the final, clubs nominate athletes in each event as per the rules available here.
Points are accumulated over the 6 rounds so every athlete in every event for every round matters!
At the end of 6 rounds, the top clubs based on premiership points will be invited to the final.
- The best 8 clubs in the Opens age group
- The best 5 clubs in the 10s-12s, 13s-14s, 15s-17s, 35-49 & 50+ age groups
A number of age groups are combined in both Junior and Masters competition. This is to facilitate the point score and make the Treloar Shield more meaningful.
However, all events are seeded within the age groups, so while athletes may be competing in an event with older athletes, they will be placed in heats with athletes of a similar standard- to facilitate the athletes enjoyment and performance.
Within the Treloar Shield age group, athletes will be able to throw their correct implement weight for their one year age group. You can see the event age group specification here.
Athletes/parents should ensure;
- They have entered for the event within the timeframe (Entries open 12 days prior to the event day and closes the Tuesday 12pm before the event day)
- They have read and understood the competition rules outlined on the event page here
- They have read the FINAL timetable which will be released after entries have closed.
- Athletes have the club uniform.
- They arrive to the venue with enough time to park and warm up for their event
- They understand there is no call room, marshalling or calling of the events; Athletes must report to the Start line of the track race 10 mins before scheduled start time and 20 minutes before the start time to their field event to allow for warm up attempts.
Little Athletics, Junior, Open or Concession members under the NSW partnership are eligible to participate in the Treloar Shield Series. Athletes must also be 9 years of age in 2025 to compete.
Club Administrators/ Team managers are not required for the Treloar Shield Series - Preliminary Rounds. The point of entry and cost of competition is the responsibility of the athlete/parent.
We encourage club admins to ensure parents/athletes are aware of the pertinent information for each round, and encourage athletes to participate in order to get more points for your club.
If your club makes the final, the entries will be taken by the clubs. Further information is currently available in the rules here, with specific processes to be distributed in time to the relevant clubs.

Point Score
Every athlete who competes scores points for their club, no matter your performance, you can help your club qualify for the final to be held at the end of December.
Points are awarded as per the table found in the competition Rules here.
Points will be allocated per age group for each gender and then accumulated to create one pointscore for the age group.
At the end of each round, club with the most points for that age group will be awarded 1 premiership point.
Points are acculmulated over the 6 rounds, so every athlete in every event for every round matters!
At the end of 6 rounds, the top clubs based of premiership points will be invited to the final.
- The best 8 clubs in the Opens age group
- The best 5 clubs in the 10s-12s, 13s-14s, 35-49 and 50+ and Para division.
We have split up the age division to have their own pointscore for various reasons.
1. This helps clubs who may be stronger in the junior catergories to be competitive. Likewise with the masters age groups.
2. We have created our pointscore to be competitive by allocating 1 premiership pioint for the highest scoring club for each round. This encourages clubs to compete week in week out, as missing 1 week could drop them multpile places in the poitnscore.
