What is Treloar Shield?
Mate vs Mate, Club vs Club. In an inherently individual sport, the Treloar Shield is a weekly team-based competition that allows athletes to contribute to a club point score and qualify for the final.
Athletes aged 9-90+ can participate in a range of events held on a rotational basis thought the series. Rounds of the Treloar Shield regularly attracts weekend warriors, new ANSW members, future and current Olympians. The Treloar Shield is for EVERYONE!
Set in a friendly and welcoming environment, no matter your aspirations, the next PB, state or National qualification, or simply to contribute for your club to make the final, this one is for you!
What has changed?
To ensure the sustainability and continue the growth that we have seen thus far in the Treloar Shield product, we will be implementing the following changes for the 2025 Treloar Shield Series.
For four of the six rounds, events will be held at two separate venues on the same day, with both venues offering a full program within a similar timeframe. Athletes can choose which venue to attend each round (but not both), ensuring flexibility, reduced wait times, and a more manageable competition experience for ALL.
This model allows us to maintain the quality of the event while continuing to welcome the growing number of athletes who want to be part of the Treloar Shield.
What are we trying to achieve?
-
Enable current numbers and future growth
-
Shorter sharper event days
-
More manageable timetables
-
More manageable and athlete-friendly field event group sizes
What this means...
- Athletes from any club may enter at either venue on a given day; however, athletes may not compete at both venues on the same day.
- Each venue will offer a similar program of events, designed to help disperse participant numbers evenly.
- A single pointscore will be maintained, with results from both venues combine.
To ensure the Treloar Shield continues to provide the best possible competition experience, NSW Athletics is introducing Venue Control Limits.
These are not about restricting participation! Every athlete who wants to compete will still have the opportunity to do so. Instead, Venue Control Limits are a way of balancing numbers across venues when the same round is held in two locations. If too many athletes choose one venue and very few attend the other, it becomes difficult to deliver a safe, efficient, and positive experience for everyone. Venue Control Limits will only apply to certain rounds and only to events offered at both venues.
**Specialist events that are held at a single venue will not be subject to these limits.
What are we trying to achieve?
- Ensure even distribution to athletes across both venues
- Maximise experience for all
What this means...
Once the capacity at a venue is reached, no further entries will be accepted at that location, except in cases where events are only offered at that venue.
Athletes attempting to enter a full venue will be directed to the alternative venue where space remains available.
If both venues reach capacity, additional places will be released at each venue to accommodate further entries
This season, the Treloar Shield will operate under a NSW Permit rather than a World Athletics Permit.
This change allows us to continue delivering a high-quality competition while removing regulations that don’t always align with the intent of the event or the needs of the majority of participants.
Athletes can still qualify for the Australian Championships, and the competition will continue to be conducted to a high standard. While performances will no longer count towards World Athletics rankings, athletes aiming for international qualification will have plenty of other opportunities across the season.
What are we trying to achieve?
- More flexible structure reflecting the spirit of the Treloar Shield, creating an environment that’s inclusive, adaptable, and focused on participation.
- Accommodate the growing popularity of the Treloar Shield Series while exploring new strategies to expand our pool of officials.
- Make event delivery more sustainable as we scale.
What this means...
A structured, professionally conducted competition
Performances are still eligible for qualification for the Australian Championships
International qualification will no longer be available; however, other opportunities will be available for the select number of athletes for which this affects.
