Waratah Series Short Course Cross Country Preview: Gusman looking for third consecutive win
This Sunday the third annual joint Waratah Series Short Course and Little Athletics NSW Cross Country Championships will be held at Dapto over the purpose-built Kembla Joggers cross country course.
The joint venture, between Athletics NSW and Little Athletics NSW, will conduct events from under-7 to 75+ years – a massive day of fit athletes having fun at glorious venue.
The event also incorporates the 104th NSW short course cross country, first held in 1906. Located in the middle of the day, is an Open Great Fun Run, covering distances of 1km, 2km and 4km.
Reigning open champions are Ed Goddard (UTN) and the extraordinary Angela Leadbeatter (MQH) who won her third NSW cross country title, the first in 2000, the second in 2007 and then a third in 2017.
Goddard also has the experience of placing second on this course, at last year’s at the Australian cross country championships. However, he will have his work cut out to hold off Jordan Gusman (BAN) looking for his third consecutive win in as many weeks, following on from his Waratah Series Cross Country win in Nowra at the 10km road race on the Gold Coast last weekend. Also, in the podium hunt will be 2017 world championships marathon representative and 2014 champion in this event, Brad Milosevic. Joining them on the start line will be Matthew Cox (UTN), Russell Dessaix-Chin (SYU), Rorey Hunter (BAN), Kieren Tall (SSR), Ed Trippas (UTN) and Keith Macpherson (STG).
The open women’s will be an intriguing race. Not amongst the pre-entries, but if she makes a late appearance, Chloe Tighe (KEJ), a 1500m specialist, who won the NSW 10km Waratah Series Cross Country two weeks ago, will be unstoppable over the shorted distance. Amongst the others it would appear to be a potentially terrific battle between four Sydney University athletes, Lara Hamilton, Beth Croft and twins Holly and Paige Campbell. Also, not out of contention, is two-time NSW half marathon champion Belinda Martin (STG).
