Little Athletics NSW State Championships: 5 athletes remembered

As we prepare for the HART Sport 54th Little Athletics NSW Track and Field Championships commencing Saturday at Homebush, we reflect on a few athletes whose names are still in the record books three, four and amazingly five decades later. Of the five we remember, three went on to become Olympians for three different countries, another won gold at the Commonwealth Games and the fifth played rugby league for Australia.

Sydney Track Classic: Hurdlers smash barriers

The 2025 Sydney Track Classic may not have attracted any major international stars, but these days Aussies are themselves the big names in the sport. A very warm day ensured the track was quick and tailwinds also assisted. Three early performances, the two 400m hurdle events and men 4x100m relay record, got the momentum going, and from there it was wall-to-wall great performances and good racing for the estimated 2000 crowd.

The 11-day festival of athletics in NSW got underway at Homebush today in perfect conditions. With steeplechase and 400/300/200m hurdle events on the program, the officials were working overtime moving barriers and hurdles.

11 Day Festival of Athletics

In just over a week, we will commence an historic 11-day period of athletics at Homebush where we will conduct four major competitions and see athletes from the age eight competing together at the same venue as Olympians. The exciting period of athletics is a massive undertaking, and will test our athletes, clubs/centres, coaches and especially technical officials and NSW Athletics staff during the 67 hours, or equivalent of three continuous days of competition.

VALE Don Brodie OAM

Last week the athletics community lost one of its much loved and longest serving volunteers, when Don Brodie passed away aged 96. Don’s enormous contribution to the sport, largely with Western Suburbs Athletics Club, was a seven-decade involvement in administration and coaching at the club that continued as recently as 2013 when he was President while in his 80s.

In perfect conditions at Bankstown in Sydney last evening, NSW’s Josh Phillips and Victorian Claudia Hollingsworth claimed the 2025 Australian mile championship held at the annual Albie Thomas Mile meet.
