Hobart Track Classic: NSW Review – Daniel breaks NSW record, Delta PBs and Louison-Roe over 1.93m

NSW teenagers were in extraordinary form at the Chemist Warehouse Hobart Track Classic. Daniel Okerenyang set a NSW record, Delta Amidzovski sets a LJ PB, while there were World U20 Championships qualifiers for Izzy Louison-Roe (HJ), Ivy Boothroyd (800m), Matthew McLachlan (3000m) and Eliza Lawton (3000m).

Delta Amidzovski added 4cm to her long jump PB to leap an excellent 6.62m. She moved from #18 to #14 Australian all-time. If she had achieved the performance last year, she would have broken the Australian U20 record of 6.60m held by current Sydney coach Lyn Jacenko (nee Tillett), set 54-years ago in Munich. It was later equalled by Brooke Buschkuehl in 2011. Delta broke Nicole Boegman’s Hobart meet record of 6.59m, set in 1995. Delta remains in range of qualifying for the World indoors (6.75m) and Commonwealth Games (6.70m)

With his opening jump of 15.86m, Wagga Wagga’s Daniel Okerenyang broke the NSW U20 triple jump record held by Olympic finalist Connor Murphy. Daniel added 18cm to the older mark. It was also a 19cm PB and his second World U20 Championships qualifier.

Izzy Louison-Roe won the high jump with her second best ever clearance of 1.93m, ahead of a close third attempt at 1.97m.

NSW went 1-2 in the 800m, with Jayla Hancock-Cameron taking the win in 2:02.22, from Ivy Boothroyd who ran a PB time of 2:03.64, her third World U20 Championships qualifier.

Despite crashing through the last two hurdles, teenager Matthew Hunt still held on for a comfortable win in the 400m hurdles in a time of 50.64.

In a high quality men’s Australian 3000m championship, 17-year-old Matthew McLachlan destroyed his PB by 14 seconds, clocking 8:00.48 minutes. He clocked his first World U20 Championships qualifier, along with three other athletes in the race.

In the women’s Australian 3000m race, Newcastle’s Rose Davies placed fourth in 8:41.61. In 14th Eliza Lawton clocked an eight seconds PB time of 9:12.83 – another World U20 Championships qualifier.
