Member Protection Information Officer
A club should appoint a Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO) to help create a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for everyone involved. The MPIO plays an important role in supporting members who may have concerns about behaviour within the club, such as harassment, discrimination, bullying, child safety issues, or breaches of the club’s code of conduct.
The MPIO is a trained, approachable point of contact who provides confidential information and guidance to members about their rights, responsibilities, and the options available if they experience or witness inappropriate behaviour. Rather than acting as an investigator or decision-maker, the MPIO helps people understand the club’s policies and complaint procedures, supports them in considering possible next steps, and can refer matters to the appropriate people or organisations when needed.
Having an MPIO demonstrates that the club is committed to member wellbeing, fairness, and good governance. It reassures members that concerns will be taken seriously and that there is a clear, supportive pathway for addressing issues. By promoting awareness of respectful behaviour and providing early guidance when problems arise, an MPIO helps foster a positive culture where all members feel safe, valued, and able to participate fully in club activities.
