NSW Athletics together with Australian Athletics, is leading the development of the first-ever NSW Athletics Facility Strategy, a landmark initiative designed to transform the state’s athletics infrastructure for generations to come.
With nearly 50,000 registered participants across the state and a projected surge in demand ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, NSW requires a stronger, more connected network of high‑quality, accessible and inclusive athletics facilities. Yet many clubs and centres currently operate in ageing venues that fall short of competition standards, lack essential amenities, and need significant investment to support future growth.
This inaugural Strategy establishes a unified, whole-of-sport vision to grow participation, strengthen athlete pathways, enhance event delivery, and support the long-term sustainability of the club network. Developed in collaboration with Australian Athletics, the NSW Government, Local Government Authorities, schools, clubs, volunteers, coaches, and athletes and guided by sport and recreation planning specialists Inside Edge Sport and Leisure Planning, the Strategy reflects extensive engagement across the NSW athletics community.
We extend our sincere thanks to the many stakeholders whose insights shaped this inaugural Strategy. Together, we can bring this vision to life and ensure that athletics continues to inspire, unite and strengthen communities across New South Wales for generations to come.
A 10-Year Roadmap for a Stronger Athletics Future
The NSW Athletics Facilities Strategy is underpinned by three strategic pillars and sets out a 10‑year investment and delivery framework. This framework provides a unified, evidence‑based roadmap for delivering an accessible, equitable and future‑ready network of athletics facilities across NSW.
The Strategy calls for a shared commitment from all levels of government, education and the sport to ensure that every community has the opportunity to run, jump, throw, wheel and participate in safe, modern and welcoming environments.
