What is Regional Championships?

Introduced for the 2023/24 season, the Regional Championships will take place in each of the eight (8) Athletics NSW regions, and are delivered in a relaxed environment and are available to the whole athletics community, aged 7-12. In country regionals, these will be whole of sport events tailored for the entire Athletics Community.

For affiliated clubs, a teams-based competition is offered, where clubs score points for their club to crown the best club in the region.

For athletes with individual aspirations, the Regional Championships will also serve as a direct qualifier to the inaugural Youth Championships to take place in March 2024.

Regions

There are 8 regions in NSW. 4 in Country areas and 4 in Metropolitan Sydney.

Athletes who are registered with an ANSW affiliated club must compete in the region their club belongs.

Athletes who are not a registered member of an ANSW club must compete in the Regional Championships for which their primary residential address is.

Youth Championships - How Do I Qualify?

Importantly, the Regional Championships will also serve as the qualification for the inaugural NSW Youth Championships. In each Regional Championships, 1st and 2nd place in each event will progress automatically to the NSW Youth Championships.

Further positions will also be available from the NSW Country Championships via the ANSW rolldown, which will reward performances across a range of competitions.

The Regional Championships will also be the first step for athletes wishing to represent NSW at the Australian Athletics Championships. While in 23/24 this will be reserved only for athletes in the Under 12 age group, this expected to expand in future years.
