Statement relating to Selection in the Australian Cross Country Championships
Athletics NSW is aware that there is much interest in the process for qualification for the Australian Cross Country Championships. As you may have seen, School Sport Australia and Athletics Australia have chosen not to deliver a joint Cross Country Championships in 2024. As a result, Athletics Australia have announced the Athletics Australia Cross Country Championships will take place in Launceston on Saturday 31st August and Sunday 1st September. Athletics Australia have yet to release the entry guidelines for this event, but have communicated to Athletics NSW that the event will look different from recent iterations, so much so that Athletics NSW is unable to release a holding or draft selection policy. Hence further details, including methods of selection, have not been released by ANSW.
What we are aware of is the following;
- The Australian Cross Country Championships will take place on Saturday 31st August and Sunday 1st September in Launceston Tasmania
- The Competition will be expanded to include events for the following age groups, Under 11, Under 12, Under 13, Under 14, Under 15, Under 16, Under 17, Under 18, Under 20, Opens and Masters
- Athletics NSW will select all age groups except for Masters. Masters’ athletes should contact the NSW Masters Association
- The Number of athletes to be selected in each age group is still TBC, but we expect this to be no less than 2023 ( 10 in 2023)
- We anticipate that the individual events will take place on Saturday and a relay event will take place on the Sunday. However, this is yet to be confirmed.
- Primary and Secondary school athletes will be able to contest both the School Sport and Athletics Australia Championships
While Athletics NSW is unable to release a full selection criterion at this time, we can confirm the following details for athletes planning their season;
- As a prerequisite for selection, athletes will have to contest at least two of the Athletics NSW Winter Season. These events include, St George Classic, Sydney 10, NSW Cross Country Relays, NSW Cross Country Championships, NSW Short Course Cross Country Championships
- Further to the above point, Athletes are strongly encouraged to preference the NSW Cross Country Championships (23rd June) and NSW Short Course Cross Country Championships (13th July). The vast majority of selections will be made from the results from these two events, with the NSW Cross Country Championships holding the higher number of selections.
Based on advice from Athletics Australia, Athletics NSW is anticipating the release of a selection criteria in the week commencing 20th May.
Athletics NSW agrees that communication to its members is paramount, and to this end, will release further information as soon as it is available.

The NSW Government State Representative Award recognises people who have represented the State of NSW in a competitive field.
Nominees of any age, who have represented NSW in a competitive field (eg. sport, music, the arts or academic), either nationally or internationally, may be nominated for the Award.
