NSW Relay Championships: Meet Records, Alberta Scoring Tables & History

Over the last few weeks, much work has been going on to update the NSW Relay Championship records.

With the introduction of new events at the State Relays and now use of the Alberta Youth Scoring Tables for the Jumps and Throws relays for the aged 8s to 16-17-years, we have been updating historical records ahead of the upcoming two weekends of NSW State Relays Championships. They are now titled ‘NSW Relay Championship Meet Records’.

FIELD EVENTS (8 yrs to 16-17 yrs)

Craig Scott has assisted David Tarbotton and Youcef Abdi to re-score our historic Jumps and Throws records using the Alberta Youth Scoring Tables. The new totals will be available on the website (https://www.nswathletics.org.au/results/records/) and in Athletics Live.

TRACK EVENTS (13 years to 16-17 years)

We have amalgamated the old Little Athletics NSW and Athletics NSW records. We will soon finalise the Field Events re-scoring.

ALBERTA YOUTH SCORING TABLES

These tables were developed in Canada and interesting have been in use in other States for many years (Victoria since 2006). NSW had previously used different scoring tables. A version of the Alberta Youth Scoring Tables is located here https://cdn.revolutionise.com.au/cups/nswathletics/files/h8mqoqjxvp3mxibs.pdf NSW will also use them at the NSW Combined Event Championships (in Dubbo 20-21 February 2027).

BRIEF HISTORY – LITTLE ATHLETICS NSW RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS

The inaugural Little Athletics NSW Relay Championships were held at Hensley Athletics Field in December 1972, the third season for Little Athletics in the State. Hornsby totally dominated the championships winning 16 of the 20 events.

By the second championships in December 1973 there were 4000 people attending to support the 2000 athletes from 27 Centres. The scoring was: Hornsby 105 pts, Sutherland 64, Randwick Botany 42, Bankstown 37, Manly 32, Eastern Suburbs 32, Wagga 28.

By 1974 Field Event relays were introduced for aged U9 to U12. They were for a high and long jump team and a shot and discus team.

The Championships would run continuously until the two cancelled COVID years 2020 and 2021. Venues over the years included Hensley, Narrabeen, Campbelltown (grass track and synthetic track) and Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre (Homebush).

This year is the 53rd edition of the relay championships.
