Sydney Marathon – Pompeani on the rise
Two NSW athletes recorded brilliant performances on the day the Sydney Marathon became the seventh world major. Leanne Pompeani won the Australian marathon title, while Tom Do Canto claimed silver in the men’s race.
Against a truly international field, and competing in just her second marathon, Leanne Pompeani placed seventh overall and first Australian defeating Commonwealth champion Jessica Stenson and four-time Olympian Lisa Weightman. Leanne clocked 2:24.47, trimming six seconds from her PB, to remain #8 Australian all-time.
It was also the fastest time by an Australian woman at home, bettering Stenson 2:25.15 in Perth during COVID.
"I am elated, that was something special, and I am so glad I chose to do this,” Pompeani said.
"I have two marathons under my belt now, and two successful ones. I'd just like to see where this can take me. Obviously the next Olympics will be the goal.”
She also gave credit to a pair of marathon greats.
"I'm just thankful for Jess Stenson and Lisa Weightman. They've been massive for my journey. They're always there to answer any questions I have about the marathon, and they've really led the way.”
Tom Do Canto was just as impressive placing 16th overall and second in the men’s Australian Championship. He clocked 2:13.25, second only to his PB time of 2:11.51, set on the super quick Valencia course. Tom’s time bettered his best times at home of 2:14.41 (Melbourne) and 2:14.37 (Gold Coast) set on traditionally faster courses.
One place behind Tom, was former Australian marathon record holder Brett Robinson with 2:15.00, while first Aussie was Victorian Haftu Struntzos, who clocked a superb 2:11.27 competing in his second marathon.
