Published Tue 13 Jan 2026

NSW Athletics would like to sincerely thank Andrew Matthews, General Manager – Sport Delivery, for his outstanding contribution to the sport, as he prepares to relocate to Brisbane at the conclusion of the 2025/26 summer season.

During his tenure, Andrew has played a pivotal role in shaping and delivering NSW Athletics’ competition strategy and athlete pathways, work that has underpinned the success of the NSW Athletics Partnership and helped drive strong participation growth and performance outcomes across the state.

Andrew’s leadership has been instrumental in aligning competition structures, strengthening event delivery standards, and supporting athletes, coaches, officials, clubs, and volunteers through a period of significant change and momentum for the sport.

“Andrew has made an enormous contribution to athletics in New South Wales,” said Christian Renford, CEO of Athletics NSW. “His depth of knowledge, strategic thinking, and genuine care for the people within our sport have left a lasting legacy. The competition and pathway frameworks now in place provide a strong foundation for the next phase of growth, and we are incredibly grateful for Andrew’s leadership and commitment.”

As part of this next phase, NSW Athletics will shortly commence recruitment for the role of General Manager – Sport Delivery, ensuring continuity of leadership and continued investment in the delivery of high-quality, athlete-centred competitions across NSW.

In addition, a newly created Technical Coordinator role will be recruited to further strengthen the organisation’s technical capability and support the growing scale and complexity of our competition program. This role is designed to provide additional expertise across areas such as rules application, competition design, and event timetabling, and to support consistency and quality across events statewide.

NSW Athletics is also pleased to confirm the appointment of Youcef Abdi as Sport Competition Manager. Youcef brings strong experience across competition delivery, participation, and pathways, along with well-established relationships across the athletics community, and will play a key role in supporting the ongoing delivery of the competition calendar.
