Commonwealth Games Team Preview

Monday night, the Athletics program at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games kicks off at 7.10pm with the men’s 100m. The scheduled 400m hurdles heats, which feature our own Matthew Hunt, have been cancelled the first round when the entry numbers dropped to 24. Hunt will now start his campaign on Thursday morning AEST.

The depth and quality of some events at the Games various enormously. At the extreme is events like the men’s 400m which has four sub-44.00 second starters. On paper many of the NSW and Australian athletes are medal prospects if they can run up to their PB and that is an element of recent Australian teams where they can perform at their best and place higher than expected as others are below their best.

Almost every NSW female athlete is a medal prospect with the standout’s Nicola Olyslagers and Eleanor Patterson in the high jump, Mackenzie Little in the javelin and Jessica Hull in the mile. The three NSW women in the Para-Athletics field events are sitting just outside the top-three on rankings and a good performance on the day could see them bring home a medal.

For the men it is a lot tougher. Podium prospects include: Isaac Beacroft in the 10,000m walk, 4x100m relay with Josha Azzopardi, Rohan Browning, Chris Ius in the lineup, Luke van Ratingen in the Mixed 4x400m relay and maybe Luke Boyes in the 800m. Javelin thrower Cameron McEntyre is an example of an inform athlete facing up to a world championships level field. But don’t be surprised if his best lands him on the podium.
