Ten NSW athletes selected for the World U20 Championships
The Finnish city of Tampere will be the destination of 10 future stars of NSW track and field in July, as the city will host the 16th IAAF World Under 20 Championships from July 10-15th. The Championships are the pinnacle for junior athletes with over 160 countries competing for International honours.
Bendere Oboya, the reigning Commonwealth Youth champion is the star NSW athlete selected in the team. It is a busy year for her as next month she will compete in the Australian at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. In Tampere, she will also compete on a very strong Australian 4x400m relay team.
Training partners Alexander Kolesnikoff and Aiden Harvey are the shot putters on the team and both will be pushing towards the 20-metre mark.
It was pleasing to see former world junior star Melinda Gainsford-Taylor, who in recent years moved into the coaching ranks, placing an athlete on the team. Gainsford-Taylor who competed at the 1990 world juniors coaches relay team member Kristie Edwards.
