Sydney to host Australian Athletics Open Championships in 2026

Sydney will host the country’s premier athletics championships as the Australian Athletics Championships takes place at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre from April 9-12, 2026.
With the world watching in the lead-up to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games the meet will provide a powerful platform for Australia’s top athletes to perform, seek team selection and connect with fans across all levels of the sport.
“There’s something really special about hosting the championships in Sydney – a city that has played a key role in the story of Australian athletics since Sydney 2000,” Australian Athletics CEO Simon Hollingsworth said.
“Sydney will host the stars of the sport as they work towards becoming the number one Commonwealth nation once again in Glasgow. We’re thrilled to give this championship the spotlight it deserves.”
Supported by the NSW Government, Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre will come alive as the country’s top Open and Para athletes battle for national titles, world ranking points and selection stakes. Sydney Olympic Park Authority has recently completed significant upgrades to the venue, including enhanced seating and state-of-the-art screens with a new track to be installed later this year. , The upgrades reinforce the venue’s credentials as an elite athletics facility with the infrastructure to deliver an outstanding national championship experience.

“Sydney Olympic Park is synonymous with some of the most noteworthy moments in Australian athletics.
“As we celebrate the achievements of some of our greatest athletes at the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games, it’s fitting that we announce NSW will host the 2026 Australian Athletics Championships.
“Sydney athletics fans can look forward to witnessing Australia’s best athletes like Gout Gout and Nicola Olyslagers as they strive to set new records and win national titles.”
