Runners to Put Mount Panorama to the Test

The course for the World Athletics Cross Country Championships Bathurst 23 will host 500 runners this Sunday at a test event as part of the planning for the February world championship.

Partnering with Athletics NSW the event will also stage the New South Wales short course cross country championships, allowing runners between the ages of 9-84 to put the course to the test.

Participants will be greeted with traditional winter conditions, following heavy rain in Bathurst during the week. General Manager of the World Athletics Cross Country Championships Bathurst 23 Richard Welsh said excitement was building once again following the two postponements.

“This week is an important one in our planning for WXC Bathurst 23. It’s the middle of cross-country season in Australia and hundreds of runners will be able to put our course through the test and provide feedback on how we can put on a world championship that Australia can be proud of in February.

“There’s no shortage of inspiration, fresh off international events in Oregon, Cali and Birmingham in recent weeks, the next major world championship is in Bathurst and the preparation is well and truly underway.

“While we’ll test the course and elements of the venue, it’s also a chance for many of our management team, venue contractors and our colleagues at Bathurst Regional Council to be re-engaged and move forward with certainty,” Welsh said.

Timetable for the day follows. Opportunities for media interviews with athletes, organisers and dignitaries will be between 2:00 – 2:30pm.
