National School Knockout
NSW was well represented at the National Schools Knockout with 11 schools competing in the competition, held on Monday December 6 at Doncaster.
The best performed team, was the Pymble Ladies College team in the intermediate girls which placed third, just 10 points behind the champion school. The team was led by third placegetters, Samantha Hulme (100m 12.33), Gabrielle Ralphs (shot 11.40m) and Lara Boyle (javelin 33.26m). The best performed NSW athlete in the division was Anna Laman who, while competing for MLC Burwood, won the 800m in 2:14.64.
In the senior women’s division, Miranda Middleton won the 1500m in a superb 4:37.43, two days after she claimed bronze in the 2000m steeplechase at the Australian All Schools. Barker College’s Megan Horne won the javelin with 39.99m. Second places were won by PLC’s Phoebe Kershaw (long jump, 5.48m, Roseville’s Katrina Hunt (100m, 12.69) and Westfields’ Tepa Lemi (shot 11.26m).
In the senior men’s Westfield’s achieved a number of excellent individual performances, but struggled to beat the powerful Melbourne and Brisbane private schools. Kurt Jenner won the long jump (7.18m), while Andrew Neville took the high jump (2.00) and placed in the javelin and 110m hurdles.
The leading performer in the intermediate men’s division was Colo High School’s Jack Bangel with a bronze in the 100m hurdles.
