NSW XC: Gold for Milosevic after four consecutive podiums
Brad Milosevic and Nat Archer are the winners of the historic 2017 NSW cross country championship. The races were the 120th men’s championship and 75th women’s title for the race first held in 1890. The event also includes the Athletics NSW XC challenge, a series of road, cross country and trail events held throughout the year. The event was hosted on the Willandra course located on Jan and Rod Gibb’s Nowra property. It was the 19th occasion they had hosted the event, the first in 1993.
In 2012 Girraween’s Brad Milosevic placed fourth in the state cross country, but in every race since he has been on the podium. In 2013 and 2014 he won bronze, in 2015 and 2016, it was silver and in 2017 he continued that momentum to win gold.
From the gun, Milosevic led a small pack of three, which included rising star Ed Goddard (UTN) and 2011 state cross country champion, Courtney Carter. By the 6km mark, Milosevic had moved away holding an 11 second lead. Over the last lap he extended that to a very decisive 44 second win in 32:07. Goddard ran on for silver with Carter third. In fourth was Jeff Hunt (RBH) a three-time winner of the race.
Next stop for Milosevic is the marathon at the IAAF world championships in London in August.
Sydney University’s Nat Archer won her first NSW cross country title in Nowra on Saturday, although she was second across the line to visiting Canberra athlete Leanne Pompeani.
“I really enjoyed the challenge of Willandra, it was great to have such a great bunch of girls to run with. I haven’t raced for nearly a year, but it feels awesome to be back,” Archer said.
Pompeani clocked 38:31, with Archer running 38:46. In second (NSW) was Elese Gallen (UTN) who continued her tremendous year which stared on the track over summer. Gallen, a good junior athlete, is making significant progress as a senior, under coach James ‘Jumbo’ Fitzgerald. The bronze medal went to steeplechaser Paige Campbell (SYU) in a time of 39:28.
Of particular note was the tremendous run by Rejoov Runners coach and founder Greta Truscott, who placed tenth in 43:32.
