Combined event women to target Commonwealth Games standard

Home Games effect. That is what we will see on show this weekend at the NSW women’s heptathlon championship. The field includes three of the top-20 Australian athletes of all-time, with two aged 18 and 20 and at the start of their journey. The tremendous depth and quality helped by the lure of a home Games.

The competition provides the first domestic opportunity for the heptathletes to stake their claims for selection in the Australian team for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The local charge is led by World University Games silver medallist Alysha Burnett, 20, who tallied 5835 in Taipei last August - the highest score by an Aussie for nine years. The other NSW athlete is Sophie Stanwell who since placing an outstanding fourth in Glasgow four years ago, has been hampered by injury. Victorian 18-year-old, Celeste Mucci, is the third key challenger in this battle. All three athletes, in addition to US-based NSW athlete, Melissa-Maree Farrington, currently sit on a B qualifier. But with a quota limit on team sizes for the first time at the Commonwealth Games, the athletes will be chasing the A standard. Also in the field is Canberra junior Andrea Thompson who could surprise.

So how do the athletes line up for the weekend??

CG A standard: 6000 points

              Qualifiers - nil

CG B standard: 5600 points

              Qualifiers – Alysha Burnett N 5835, Celeste Mucci V 5721, Melissa-Maree Farrington N 5692 points.
