Coaches WE NEED YOU for the Sporting Schools Program

How many times have you heard an athlete say, I tried athletics at school, enjoyed it, then decided to join an athletics club. It is one of the most common pathways of athletes into our sport. Also as coaches, we know the impact of sport on young people. It can build and improve confidence, fitness, resilience, tolerance, sense of achievement, reward, patience, connection and engagement.

To help us achieve this impact on kids, the Australian Sports Commission is funding a program, titled the ‘Sporting Schools Program’. Just imagine if we can introduce twice as many school students to athletics through this fun and enjoyable program, how many more participants will we have in the future?

COACHES we need more of you to help us deliver this program and currently have a shortage of qualified coaches. Think of the opportunity you to introduce our great sport to more primary school students. And of-course there is an opportunity to earn income. Sure, you will need to be flexible to be able to deliver the program during school hours (or after), but you maybe a tertiary student, work part-time, retired or self-employed and have this flexibility in your work hours. Read our article about one of these coaches Andrew Byrne to get an insight into the program.

How do I qualify to deliver this program?

Very simple, complete the Level 1 Community Athletics Coach course and hundreds of you already have this qualification and then a four-hour IAAF Kids’ Athletics Upskilling Course. Oh, and of course enjoy imparting know of our sport to kids through games, fun skills and activities !!  Read more about the program (teachers are also qualified)

The next Level 1 Community Athletics Coach course is Sunday 10 December (at Bankstown, cost $220 to $240), and

IAAF Kids Athletics Upskilling Course is Saturday 6 January (at Homebush, cost $99).

To register for the course go to the Athletics NSW coaching page. You can also telephone Andrea at Athletics NSW 02 9746 1122 or

If you are a parent/teacher and keen for this program in your school, you should ask the school to embrace this government funded program. You can find out more about this from Tait Forster ( at Athletics Australia.
