As we roll into the heart of the summer athletics season, there are many great things happening in our sport however I wanted to spend this month’s CEO’s report detailing some of the plans for the Treloar Shield meet on the 16th of December, which will be a little different from the usual.
First to the good news. For ANSW Club summer members who register online by 9am on Thursday 14 December, entry for this meet will be FREE. That’s right, zero dollars* for as many events as you would like to enter on the day.
What’s the catch? Well, we would like each athlete to make themselves available to officiate/volunteer over the course of the day. Not for the whole day, and we appreciate that competition will likely remain your number one focus, however even just half an hour assisting will go a long way because we are holding events on both the competition track and the warm up track at the same time for this meet.
This is an ambitious project, however it’s one that we are keen to try for a number of reasons:
1. We know that athletes would prefer to not have to spend their whole day at the track if there is a quicker way of getting through events (and this counts for coaches and administrators also). Operating two tracks allows us to run more events in a shorter period.
2. Using both tracks will give us the opportunity to have (almost) every event group guaranteed of a chance to compete on the day.
3. Fundamentally a core part of the ANSW strategy is to provide more opportunities to participate. If we are able to build towards an environment where ANSW is able to resource two tracks at SOPAC running at the same time, this will be a big win for the sport.
4. Having athletes working alongside officials will give each group a better chance to ‘see how the other side lives’. I firmly believe that we will have better athletes and better officials if each knows a little bit more about how and why the other does things.

What happens if you don’t want to volunteer? That’s fine, we appreciate that there are many reasons why you might not be able to assist on the day. In that case, we would simply ask that you pay the standard fee when registering - there will be options provided within the registration pathway. Similarly, for this event we will also be offering as a part of the registration process the opportunity to contribute to the Officials Christmas Party, which will take place after the event on the 16th. Our officials volunteer their time to help you achieve your best in athletics, so it’s a good time to think about maybe shouting a cold drink or two.
Needless to say, there are challenges around putting on this meet. With so many moving parts there will doubtless be a hiccup or two on the day, so I ask in advance for your patience if we have to work through some details. Having said that, all of our summer events so far this season have run to time and I am confident that the outstanding ANSW officials will do everything they can to make this event a great success. We ask for your help in contributing to this effort.

*on the day registration fees will be the same as for standard events, as will entry fees for non Members. Community Members and RunNSW Members are not eligible for free entry.
