Special recognition for Dan Suchy – ‘heart and soul of the athletics program’

A new category introduced at the 2019 Athletics Annual Awards held last week in Sydney was the special achievement award. One of the inaugural winners was Dan Suchy for his outstanding work with the Westsfields Schools athletics program and the Westfields Athletics Club which has helped develop Dani Stevens, Fabrice Lapierre and John Thornell.

On Saturday night at the 2019 Athletics NSW Annual Awards over 180 people celebrated our great year of athletics which commenced at the Commonwealth Games in April. Recognised were officials, volunteers, coaches, clubs and of course the athletes who made it a year to remember.

Silver for Ralph at world relays

Competing at the fourth IAAF World Relays over the weekend in Yokohama Japan, Commonwealth Games representative Joshua Ralph and Victorian national 800m champion Catriona Bisset combined to win Australia’s sole medal in the unique 2x2x400m relay. In the traditional relays, two teams have confirmed selection for the 2019 Doha World Championships.

St Lawrence leads home record field in Sydney10

Running is booming in NSW and that was never more evident with a 60% increase in the entry numbers for the 2019 Sydney10 held on Saturday at Homebush where just under 2000 athletes competed. There were also performance records galore led by Ben St Lawrence’s outstanding 29:01 to win the men’s 10km race and claim the NSW road championship. The women were also quick with Emily Brichacek winning in 32:34.
