MOUNTAIN RUNNERS SCALE TO NEW HEIGHTS

Author: Athletics NSW Administrator/Wednesday, 20 June 2007/Categories: News

A strong contingent of NSW distance runners returned home from the Australian Mountain Running Championships in Canberra last weekend with 7 medals in hand.

The most successful athlete was 16 year old Veronica Wallington (St George), who took out the junior women's 4.7km race ahead of more fancied and experienced rivals. World Junior Cross Country representative Lara Tamsett (Sydney University) and training partner Lauren McKillop (Randwick-Botany Harriers) made it a clean sweep of the medals for NSW.

In the Open Men's race, Kembla Jogger's Stephen Brown provided a strong challenge to two-time winner of the event, Scott McTaggert. McTaggert's age and experience provided him the advantage to claim the title for a third time, with Brown finishing second 55 seconds behind over the 13.3km course.

Other medal winners were Gosford duo Cameron Page and Ben Guest, who were second and third respectively in the junior men's event and Cindy King (Randwick-Botany Harriers), who was second in the open women's event.
