Ryan Gregson sets Australian 1500m Record

Author: Athletics NSW Administrator/Friday, 23 July 2010/Categories: News

Ryan Gregson, 20, has broken the 19-year-old Australian 1500m record with a time of 3:31.06 while competing in the Samsung Diamond League last night in Monaco.

The race was fast early and the field quickly strung out, with Gregson sitting around 10th for most of the race. He got the bell at 2m:34s after moving into eighth place. Although running into some traffic at the 150m mark, Gregson still ran home strongly for fifth place to break Simon Doyle’s record of 3:31.96 set in 1991.

In the race were the three fastest metric milers of 2010, Kenyan's Nicolas Kiptanui Kemboi, Daniel Kipchirchir Komen and Augustine Kiprono Choge as well as two-time world champion Bernard Lagat.

Gregson (Kembla Joggers) is the first NSW athlete to hold the national 1500m record, previously held by legends of the sport Edwin Flack and John Landy. His performance, a four second personal best, was also an Oceania and NSW record.

Long jumper, Fabrice Lapierre (Westfields) was also in action in Monaco finishing second after steadily improving throughout the competition. After early performances of 7.23m, foul and 7.61m, Lapierre got moving in Round 4 with a leap of 7.84m, followed by 7.98m. Going into the final round, he moved from fourth place to second with a jump of 8.18m.
