World Juniors Wrap Up

Author: Athletics NSW Administrator/Monday, 26 July 2010/Categories: News

Central Coast hurdler Mitch Tysoe achieved the best result by a NSW athlete at the World Juniors, with a terrific sixth place in the 110m hurdles at the 13th IAAF World Junior Championships, which finished this morning in Moncton Canada.

Tysoe (Mingara) had made a very decisive start to his World Junior campaign with a superb win in his heat in a personal best time of 13.72, run into a headwind.

''It felt great from the very start. I got out first. I was mainly worried about my start, and it came together for me. I was expecting [the step up to the junior level after competing in youth] to be a lot harder. One of my goals was just to get out of the heat, and I'm very happy.''

He continued his great form in the semi-final, placing third in 13.77 and progressing to the final, where he finished sixth in 13.87 into a strong wind of 2.4 m/s.

Six NSW athletes made a finals appearance. Australia, with one medal from Queensland discus thrower, Julian Wruck, placed 39th on the medal table and 14th on the top-8 points table with a score of 32.

Another Central Coast athlete, Amanda Bartrim was very solid in the qualifying round of the women's pole vault, clearing 3.65m on her second attempt, before nailing 3.85m and a personal best of 3.95m on her initial vault. The clearance was a NSW record. In the final, Bartrim (Wyong) was unable to negotiate a new personal best, missing on her three attempts and settling for 3.80m and ninth place.

World Youth silver medallist, Amy Pejkovic, (Cherrybrook) progressed in to the high jump final with a first attempt clearance at 1.78m. A second attempt clearance would not have been sufficient to qualify. In the final, Pejkovic was again over 1.78m, this time on her second attempt, but missed her three attempts at 1.82m, settling for eighth place overall. Emily Crutcher (Asics Wests), competing in her first major championship,  cleared 1.65m, well below her personal best in the high jump qualifying rounds and failed to progress.

200m semi-finalists Ella Nelson (Illawong) and Karlie Morton (UTS Norths) ran the second and third legs for the national 4x100m relay team which placed third in their heat and seventh in the final. In the 4x400m relay Annelise Rubie (Sydney Uni) anchored the team to fifth place in the heat, in a time of 3:39.64, just missing the final by less than one second. In the men's 4x400m relay, Steven Solomon (Randwick Botany), who in the lead up had run a magnificent 47.03, led off the team which placed fourth in the heat in a time of 3:11.19.

There was disappointment for sprinters Jake Hammond (Illawong) and Patrick Fakiye (Sutherland) in the men's 4x100m relay. A genuine top-5 chance, they did not finish in the heat when Queensland anchor Tom Gamble pulled his hamstring when the team was in a qualifying position.
