Sydney10 attracts world cross country stars
With just six days until the Sydney10 on Saturday May 4 at Sydney Olympic Park, a strong group of elite athletes have already confirmed for the 2019 race. The event is part of Athletics NSW’s Waratah Run Series and the race incorporates the 89th NSW 10km Road Championship, first held in 1927.
But whether you are a first-time competitors or experienced runner, you can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the elite on the start line and finish on the blue track at the Sydney Athletics Centre.
Two of Australia’s stars at the recent world cross country championships in Denmark, head the women’s field. Canberra-based pair, Emily Brichacek (SYU) and Leanne Pompeani (ACT) were members of the women’s team which placed an outstanding fifth – the highest place by any Australian team at the global meet for 10 years. Individually Brichacek was an outstanding 35th and Pompeani just 18 seconds behind in 45th place. In that type of form, both should make it a quick and exciting race.
Adding to the depth in the women’s race will be 2018 NSW Distance Runner of the Year, Noni Cooper (SUT) and 2012 race winner, Belinda Martin (ILL). RunWest gold medallist, American Katie Conlon will also be on the start line.
In the men’s, defending champion and Australian 10,000m record holder Ben St Lawrence (Run Crew) will start favourite, just ahead of Ed Goddard (UTN) who was close on his heels last year. Both St Lawrence and Goddard dipped under 30 minutes last year as a record equalling four broke the barrier. The major danger is James Nipperess (SYU) who has run sub-29 minutes on the track and clocked his 10km road PB of 29:37 last July. The dark horse is 20-year-old Kieren Tall (SSR) who is just coming off track 5000m and 10,000m PBs of 14:20.05 and 30:19.54. His road PB of 30:05 was set in last years race where he was in the mix for most of the race.
A rising star to watch is 18-year-old world cross country representative Jackson Sharp (Run Crew). Coached by St Lawrence and Gary Howard, Sharp won the under-20 World XC trial and placed a brilliant 36th in Aarhus last month.
