Athletics NSW is proud to partner with the Shoalhaven City Council in hosting the 2018 Waratah Series Challenge in conjunction with the Willandra Cross Country Course



The Waratah Run Series is a rebranded and remodelled set of XC, road races and relays events. These events are for participants of all ages and abilities, and focus on participant enjoyment and on the day entertainment. Formally known as the ‘Athletics NSW Winter Series’, the Waratah Run Series is a community based social event incorporating a championship component.  




Join in the running fun at the beautiful Willandra Course, situated in the lush green foothills of Browns Mountain near Nowra. The course winds itself up and down the trails below Browns Mountain and shows just why this event is coined ‘the Waratah Series Challenge’! If you’re not interested in such a challenge, not to worry,  as the event has a range of suitable options for participants of all ages & abilities, with distances starting from 1km all the way through to 10km. On top of this, the event will play host to on the day activations, food and drink stalls, captivating race callers as well as entertaining music. 

The 2018 Waratah Series Challenge incorporates the 2018 NSW Cross Country Championship as part of the event as well as the Greater Bank Fun Run 1km, 2km and 4km events (these fun runs will be on-the-day entry only).

Para-athletes of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate at this year's Waratah Series Challenge!

All female para-athletes will be running at 11:40am in conjunction with the U14 Girls 3km event, and all male para-athletes will be running at 11:50am in conjunction with the U14 Boys 3km event.

Para-athlete medals will be awarded in accordance with the age groups listed below.


MEN'S 65-69 and 70-74 AGE GROUPS

Due to a change by the World Masters Association earlier this weekend, the 65-74 Men's age group has been divided into two different age groups - 65-69 and 70-74 - based on the different distances that will be completed by each age group.


The 70-74 Men's age group will be running the 6km distance, and will by vying for medals for the team and individual championships based on this event. Additionally, this age group will also be offered the originally-offered 8km distance, and this will feature an individual championship only for this distance.


The 65-69 Men's age group will be running the 8km distance as previously stated in the timetable.


As per usual, any athlete in the 70-74 age group will be able to "age down" to the 65-69 age group for team point scoring purposes, while retaining their individual status in the 70-74 age group (as per Rule 1.4.6 of the 2018 NSW Winter Handbook), and therefore being eligible to win an individual championship medal in the 8km 70-74 age division.


If you are a 70-74 year old male, and you would like to run in the 65-69 8km event, please notify the athlete check-in staff at least one (1) hour prior to the start time of the event.



Waratah Series Challenge races - $20 Members, $40 Non-Members (online entries now available below)

Online entries for Waratah Challenge races are now CLOSED.

On the day entries for Waratah events will be available on the day up until one (1) hour prior to the start of each event. 

Members will be able to enter on the day for $30 (cash only). Non-Members will be able to enter on the day for $40 (cash only).

Greater Bank Fun Runs - $10 (4km and 2km events), $5 (1km event) (online entries now available below)

Members are to be registered with Athletics NSW (or other state member association or Little Athletics NSW) for the 2017-18 season and wear their club/centre uniform with their bibs worn front and back for the duration of the event.


Non-members are eligible to enter however only ANSW registered athletes (or other athletes registered with another state member association) are eligible to receive medals in State Championship events.



Athletics NSW Full Members competing in the Waratah Series (excluding Dual, Community and Club athletes) will receive a Timing Tag for the season.

This tag is to be collected at the first event they attend, and is to be kept for the remainder of the 2018 Waratah and RunNSW Season.

Athletes must return the tags to Athletics NSW at the end of the season, as new tags will be allocated each season. 

The purpose of the Timing Tag is to provide a greater benefit to our members through a more efficient ‘Check In’ process for events and competitions. It is important to note that the Number on the Timing Tag will not match the number on the Athlete’s Bib.

Dual members and non-members will be required to report to athlete check in at least 45 minutes prior to the race start time to collect a temporary timing tag. This tag must be returned at the conclusion of the race.





Full Athletics NSW Members (excluding Dual, Community and Club athletes) who have entered online are required to report to athlete check-in to pick up their timing tag for the 2018 Waratah/RunNSW season. 


Members will need to wear both their competition bib and dedicated timing tag for their performance to be verified.


Dual members and non-members will be required to report to athlete check in at least 45 minutes prior to the race start time to collect a temporary timing tag. This tag must be returned at the conclusion of the race.

Individual medals will be awarded at the conclusion of each Championship race. Non-members are ineligible for state medals. Team medals will be provided to clubs for distribution after event day.

The Willandra Country Canteen will be operating on site. On top of this, the event will play host to on the day activations, encaptivating race callers as well as entertaining music. 




Races included in the Waratah Series Challenge will be point scoring events towards the Winter Premiership, Winter Trophy and Distance Runner of the Year.





Click here for age-gender form.  This form is to be used by clubs who wish to create teams with members who do not fit naturally into the team.  For example an 55+ woman who wants to be in an 35+ club team should be listed on this form, and the form submitted BEFORE the race begins. 




The Waratah Series Challenge races are offered in the following age groups: U12, U14, U16, U18, U20, Open, 35+, 40+, 45+, 50+ 55+, 60+, 65+, 70+ and 75+.



2018 Australian Cross Country Championships - NSW Team Selection


Please note that all athletes who wish to be eligible for NSW Team Selection will need to compete at the NSW Cross Country State Championships, as part of the Waratah Series Challenge.
