Peter Hutton – Coach Reflections

Peter Hutton was one of NSW finest distance runners. In the late ‘70s and ‘80s he won 12 state titles, including eight in the 3000m steeplechase. Wanting to help young people, he fell into coaching and it has continued ever since. In this article he reflects of some of the enjoyment he has received from coaching, but also some of the challengers.

This is the entry level for all Accredited Athletic Coaches.  The fundamental skills of running, jumping & throwing are introduced as well as exploring how to engage athletes in long-term participation and how to coach skills to beginner athletes. The Level 1 Community Athletics Course aims to:
  • Develop the general principles of coaching - communication, group management, safety, organisation, and instruction.
  • Provide practical coaching strategies to encourage the development of the sport's fundamental skills of running, jumping and throwing.

Level 1 Community Athletics Coaching Course AND IAAF Kids Athletics Upskilling Course

Parramatta. Saturday, January 19 AND Sunday, January 20, 2019.

The Level 1 Community Athletics Coach course is the entry-level course for all Accredited Athletic Coaches.  The fundamental skills of running, jumping & throwing are introduced as well as exploring how to engage athletes in long-term participation and how to coach skills to beginner athletes. 

The IAAF Kids Athletics Upskilling Course in part of the Sporting Schools program offering Accredited Athletics Coaches the opportunity to receive paid employment as a casual employee with Athletics Australia and to deliver the Kids' Athletics Program in Primary schools across Australia. This is also a perfect opportunity for school teachers to get involved and deliver this program before, during or after school times.

Connecting coaches to clubs

The growth of Accredited Athletics Coaches in the recent months has been incredible, with many individuals completing their Level 1 or higher. 

To assist clubs to connect with qualified coaches we are creating a Coaching Roles Board that will list available club roles to our 5000+ accredited coaches. If your club is looking for new coaches, complete the registration form online by clicking here or complete the manual document here and return via email.

Recognition of Current Competence (RCC)

RCC (also known as Recognition of Prior Learning, RPL) is available for some courses within the Athletics Australian Coach Accreditation Framework.
